Working on the Chatham Islands offers a nursing experience unlike many others. You will become part of a close-knit team and community while practising across a broad clinical scope in a rural and remote environment.
The islands are renowned for their rugged natural environment, conservation areas and unique cultural and heritage landmarks, offering the opportunity to experience a distinctive part of Aotearoa New Zealand while making a meaningful contribution to the health of the local community.
About You
You will be an experienced Registered Nurse with strong rural generalist and primary care nursing skills who is confident working within a remote healthcare environment. - Confidence to work autonomously while recognising when additional clinical support is required
- Ability to assess and respond appropriately to acute presentations

- Permanent full-time and part-time opportunities available
- Join a well-established and well-resourced specialist Child, Adolescent and Family mental health service
- A rare opportunity to join a stable, experienced multidisciplinary team where permanent vacancies do not often arise
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.
About the Role
We have a rare opportunity for Psychiatrists to join our Child, Adolescent and Family (CAF) Mental Health Service in Christchurch, with both full-time and part-time permanent positions available.
CAF provides specialist mental health assessment and treatment for tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau across Waitaha Canterbury. You will work as part of an experienced multidisciplinary team, providing specialist psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment while contributing to collaborative care planning and clinical decision-making.
These opportunities have arisen within a service that is well staffed and has an established and experienced medical workforce. Permanent vacancies within the team are uncommon, making this an excellent opportunity for a Psychiatrist looking to join a supportive service with strong multidisciplinary relationships and clinical expertise.
There is flexibility to discuss the FTE and working arrangements that may best suit the successful candidates.
About the Team/Service/Location
Our Child, Adolescent and Family service provides specialist mental health services for children and young people and works closely with their whānau, primary care, schools, community providers and other health services.
You will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team comprising psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and other experienced mental health professionals. The service values collegiality, shared clinical decision-making and the provision of high-quality, developmentally appropriate care for tamariki and rangatahi.
The Child, Adolescent and Family service in Canterbury and the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Otago Christchurch campus are closely connected through clinical, training and research links and shared workforce. The Christchurch Psychiatric registrar training programme is integrated with Mental Health services here and includes placements in child and adolescent psychiatry. Most of the Consultant Psychiatrists are also Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturers and have access to University resources, including research resources. We also take an active part in training the next generation of psychiatrists, doctors and nurses through lectures, clinical supervision, and support.
Based in Christchurch, you will have access to everything the city and wider Canterbury region have to offer, with beaches, the Port Hills and outdoor recreation close by and the Southern Alps within easy reach.
About you
We are looking for a Child and Adolescent trained Psychiatrist who enjoys working collaboratively and is committed to improving outcomes for children, young people and their whānau.
You will have:
- Vocational registration, or eligibility for vocational registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand in the scope of Psychiatry.
- Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP), or an equivalent specialist qualification.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- A commitment to culturally safe practice and improving equitable health outcomes for Māori.
International applicants who are eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand are encouraged to apply. Support with the registration and relocation process may be available for the successful candidate.
