  • Permanent full time 1.0FTE positions available
  • Qualified or Trainee roles available

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the Role

Christchurch Hospital is a busy tertiary hospital. To ensure that we continue to offer the best patient care our key team in Sterile Services keeps things running smoothly from behind the scenes. As a crucial function, our team provides a service to decontaminate, pack and sterilise instruments for the operating theatres and many other departments.

We are seeking both Qualified Sterile Services Technicians and Trainee Sterile Services Technicians to join our team on a permanent basis, covering the afternoon shift 2:30pm until 11:00pm.

Whether you are an experienced technician looking for your next opportunity or someone interested in starting a career in healthcare, we would love to hear from you. For successful trainee applicants, this is a paid training opportunity that provides a pathway to a long-term career in a growing and secure industry.

We’re looking for reliable, detail-focused, and ready to learn applicants who want to be part of a team that plays a vital role behind the scenes of patient care.

Why Join Us?

For Trainee Sterile Services Technicians:

  • Receive a fully funded one-year tertiary qualification while you work
  • Earn while you learn in a permanent position
  • Develop specialist skills in an essential healthcare service

For Qualified Sterile Services Technicians:

  • Join a busy tertiary hospital with a supportive and experienced team
  • Further develop your skills in a diverse and fast-paced environment
  • Contribute to a critical service that supports patient care across the hospital

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Cleaning, decontaminating, and sterilising reusable medical equipment
  • Inspecting instruments carefully to make sure they meet strict standards
  • Following detailed processes and documentation requirements
  • Working as part of a team in a fast-paced, process-driven environment

This is a hands-on role with repetitive tasks, so it suits someone who can stay focused, consistent, and takes pride in doing things properly.

Shifts will be covering the afternoon shift; 2:30pm and 11:00pm

About You

We welcome applications from both qualified technicians and those with no prior Sterile Services experience who are interested in completing training.

You will:

  • Have some life experience and a reliable, steady approach
  • Take pride in doing things properly and notice the small details
  • Are physically fit and comfortable being on their feet and some lifting
  • Are happy working in a structured, repetitive environment
  • Enjoy learning on the job
  • Can commit to shift work and being part of a rostered team
  • Enjoy working with others and contributing to a team

For qualified applicants, previous Sterile Services experience and relevant qualifications are highly desirable. For trainee applicants, healthcare experience is advantageous but not essential, as full training will be provided.
